KSRCE, Adhithan.S.V, Sr. Lecturer - Higher studies after MCA

There are many. If you are good in management then you can choose MBA. Or if you are good technically , then you can go for MTech. You are even eligible to become an IITian by clearing GATE exam for MTech. Or else you can go for JRF(Junior Research Fellowship)

The USA has by far the most number of accredited higher educational institutions and offers a wide variety of courses. It has the highest number of universities in the world’s top ranked Universities. The USA is the most preferred destinations for study abroad among Indian students. For quite some years now, India has remained the leading place of origin contributing to the US international student population both in terms of numbers and quality. Over time the American education system has developed a robust credit system which allows for study flexibility through ‘transfer’ from one university to the other. American degrees carry a high reputation and recognition all over the world and offer an advantage during the job hunt process. There is a strong system of support for international students.

you can also do MS by research after MCA. Annauniversity, VIT university, IIT bangalore are the few institutions which I know for doing MS.

Yes madam, Can you explain me will it be equivalent to Ph.D?

All students entering the MS or Ph.D. programs are expected to have a good background in basic sciences. A female professor from abroad mentioned that “Almost everyone goes for an MS because their perception is PhDs are fairly useless. But then the job market for engineers is much better outside academia”.

The following paragraph is Prof. Mor Harchol-Balter’s guidance for application to PhD.

“Briefly to say, MS is for your higher education, learning advanced topics and carrying out bit more complex projects. After that, you get job as software engineer in some firm with higher salary than undergraduate. As a PhD, you can work in a university or in some research lab or as system architect in some firm. From admission point of view(for CS), it’s very difficult to get admission for PhD compared to MS. But aid is almost guaranteed for PhD and almost never available for MS.”

Jennifer, I don't know on which point of view you want to compare M.S and Ph.d. Can u tell it clearly?. So that I can give clear explanation.

Sir, I want to compare the salary which I will get after my MS or after my ph.d. :) I think I am not wrong. I am confused whether I can go for M.S or Ph.D. Can you give clear picture?

Am I clear?

Recently I had a chance of visiting a blogspot,chemjobber.blogspot. I think the information given by chemjobber will be useful.

Let's look at the salary numbers.

Assume that we have 4 individuals. They're all in the same group in graduate school, they're all the same age, gender, whatever. At year 0, they decide to take 4 different paths, as shown below:

Person A: takes M.S. immediately, goes to work for 60k, gets 1% raise a year
Person B: takes M.S. immediately, goes to work for 70k, gets 1% raise a year
Person C: stays in grad school, takes Ph.D. in 2 years, goes to work for 80k, gets 1% raise a year
Person D: stays in grad school, takes Ph.D. in 2 years, does 2 year postdoc, goes to work for 90k, gets 1% raise a year

At year 20, how will their earnings differ?

Person A, M.S. (year 20 total earnings): $1,321,140.24
Person B, M.S. (year 20 total earnings): $1,541,330.28
Person C, Ph.D. (year 20 total earnings): $1,569,179.81
Person D, Ph.D. + postdoc (year 20 total earnings): $1,553,207.80

The spreadsheet of comparing salary is here, for those of you who are interested.

Caveats: There weren't any promotions in these cases, so there weren't any considerations of pay grades and the like. The salaries are a bit made up (I doubt there are postdocs hired into industry at salaries 10k above their non-postdoc colleagues.) Also, there are layoffs to be considered (how do you calculate that?)

Conclusions? Hard to say, but in this idealized scenario, assuming all other things equal, Ph.D. chemists make up the 2 year difference in salary between their already-working M.S. brethren/sistren in the first ten years of their working life, if not sooner.

Is the salary difference really that great? It depends, of course, on the magnitude of the difference. In that first 20 years, the lifetime difference in total salary between Person B, (70k annual salary) and Person C (80k) is less than $30,000. (Note: of course, it's not completely fair to compare someone who's been in the workforce for 18 years as opposed to 20.)

So now you have to take decion, Jenifer. Wish you all the best. From all point of view, you consult these points with your parents and well wishers and let me know what will be your decision afterwards.
